Poltergeist made a highly encouraging debut at very soft ground at Newbury in July 2009, leading for much of the race before fading in the final stages. Richard Hughes reported that the horse had not acted on the ground but had shown plenty of early speed and was sure to improve as he strengthened. Poltergiest returned to Newbury in August and, but for traffic problems, would have won what looked to be a very competitive maiden. He is a very exciting prospect for this coming season.
Poltergeist won in really good style with plenty in hand on his seasonal debut at Salisbury on 8th June. He looked in great condition and was completely relaxed in all the preliminaries. He broke well and Richard Hughes settled him into a lovely rhythm just in behind the leaders. With two furlongs to go, Poltergeist was still travelling easily and Richard cruised into the lead inside the final furlong and just had to shake the reins to ensure a smooth victory by ½ a length from the Sir Michael Stoute trained “Warm Memories”.
Since then, unfortunately Poltergeist suffered a training set-back and has returned to Highclere Stud for a period of rest before resuming horse-walker exercise. He moved to Malcolm Bastard’s yard in mid July where he will be on horse walker exercise for nine weeks before being turned out to grass back at the Stud in the Autumn.
