Ascension On The Up

21st February, 2020

The Roger Varian-trained Ascension is due to step up into faster work next week as his highly anticipated seasonal reappearance for the Benedict Allen Syndicate draws closer.

Ascension is a 3yo son of Dark Angel and improved markedly from his first to second starts when running out an impressive 3½L winner of a six-furlong novice stakes at Salisbury in mid-August.  The grey colt then followed up with another victory in a six-furlong novice at Newcastle, justifying his short 2/7F odds to forge 1½L ahead of the subsequent winner Gravity Force who was also later Group 3-placed.

He started the 3/1 favourite in his bid to land a hat trick in a quality seven-furlong nursery on Dubai Champions Day at Newmarket in mid-October, but dwelt at the start and then found himself short of room when getting into top gear, finishing an unlucky fourth in the hands of Ryan Moore.

Ascension is open to any amount of improvement this year and could kick off his 2020 season in a seven-furlong handicap at Newbury’s Greenham meeting on Friday 17 April.
