Cheltenham Festival Countdown

24th February, 2020

There are just 15 days to go until the start of the Cheltenham Festival and Ballywood has recently been given an entry into the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup Handicap Chase on Friday 13 March.  Ballywood is one of 53 horses in the Grade 3 2m 62y chase and from a current handicap rating of 146 will have no difficulty getting into the race.

The six-year-old, who won three times over fences last season during what was his novice campaign, has been sidelined since mid-December only because of the prolonged wet weather conditions.  However, Alan King has had this race on his mind for Ballywood, who has finished third on his last two outings on softer than ideal conditions at Ascot and Cheltenham, for some considerable time and will be hoping that the going once again dries out in time for the big meeting.

Highclere has taken a private box available to all owners on the day of Ballywood's intended race (also Cheltenham Gold Cup day!) and there are a few spaces available so do please contact us on 01488 669166 or email for further details and to secure your place.  The package cost includes a day members badge, car park pass, racecard, morning coffee, lunch, drinks and afternoon tea.  Highclere will also be organising a champagne reception before lunch.

Highclere Racing’s Crievehill has also been given precautionary entries into two of the handicap chases at the Festival but is likely to head straight to the Grand National at the beginning of April.
