Evander Wins Boxing Day Bout

26th December, 2019

Evander had shown abundant promise when second on his first two appearances over hurdles and the four-year-old made it third time lucky with a polished and improved performance to win a 2 ½m novices’ hurdle at Sedgefield on Boxing Day.

The son of Arcadio, Highclere Racing’s first horse in training with Oliver Greenall, had won his only start in a point-to-point the previous season before being purchased at the Goffs UK Spring Horses in Training Sale in May.

Viewed very much as a chaser of the future, he had looked a bit of a work in progress and tended to race freely on his first couple of starts.  Given a positive ride by the talented conditional rider Ross Turner at Sedgefield, Evander made every yard of the running and gradually wore his rivals into submission, leaving only O’Hanrahan Bridge as a serious threat until he too cried enough going to the last.

Evander kept on very strongly and crossed the line four lengths clear, with a break of 21 lengths to the odds-on favourite Induno in third.  Congratulations to all of Evander’s owners, trainer Oliver Greenall and jockey Ross Turner.
