Form is Temporary - Class is Permanent

26th February, 2020

An often repeated sporting euphemism is ‘form is temporary, class is permanent’

Our exciting new import to Australia Bartholomeu Dias is a perfect example of this, he's all class and is about to create his own Australian form.

This impressive European gelding showcased his potential when finishing fourth at Royal Ascot as a two-year-old followed by three wins in England last year for trainer Charlie Hills and he is now part of the Highclere Racing team following his purchase at the 2019 Tattersalls Horses-In-Training Sale at Newmarket.

Now happily ensconced in Australia in the care of Group 1-training partnership Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Bartholomeu Dias is giving every indication he can make a real impression in 2020.

Gelded as a three-year-old, Bartholomeu Dias gave a hint of what he can be capable of by winning twice over a mile and a half (2400m) in 2019, however his very best run was fourth in Newcastle’s Northumberland Plate which is a two mile handicap and one of the most competitive in England.  Ridden on the speed, Bartholomeu Dias stayed on well to finish fourth, beaten two lengths in an effort which showed this horse is a stayer and ideally suited to pick up some good races in Australia.

Finishing behind him was Red Galileo, considered good enough by Godolphin to bring to Australia for last year’s spring carnival, and Stratum, subsequent winner of the Cesarewitch Stakes at Newmarket over two miles and two furlongs.

The British handicapper rated Bartholomeu Dias on 98 for this performance which places him ahead of our own Lord Belvedere in the UK and we all know how well he has progressed in Australia for Maher and Eustace. When looking for a lightly raced European stayer to via for the Cups races in Australia and maybe even the Melbourne Cup, this horse ticks many boxes.

Having been given time to settle in and acclimatise in what has been a long hot summer, the classy looking Bartholomeu Dias is enjoying a short spell in preparation for more serious work as he approaches his Australian debut. Highclere Australia could not be more excited about his prospects and would love you to join us on this journey.
