Sir Alex Ferguson may have been “shattered” by Manchester United’s 6-1 defeat at the hands of local rivals Manchester City, but there’s still hope for the old boy.
The football manager, a long-time enthusiast, has joined Highclere Thoroughbred Racing’s Wavertree syndicate which has the royal seal of approval.
At a cost of £36,950 Fergie has shared ownership of two horses picked by John Warren, the Queen’s racing manager. “These are horses John saw as having the most potential and they could be future Derby winners,” a Highclere racing spokesman says. The company is helmed by Harry Herbert, whose brother, Lord Carnarvon owns Highclere Castle, the real-life Downton Abbey.
