Gustavus Vassa (GB)

Gustavus Vassa is what we believe to be a seriously exciting middle distance prospect. A son of Equiano with a Timeform rating of 98p after only three runs when formerly trained in Ireland by Andrew Oliver, but Gustavus Vassa’s races did not go unnoticed by the great Willie Mullins who swooped in to buy him with a view to him becoming a Melbourne Cup prospect next year - a race that Willie has already targeted with tremendous success with Max Dynamite finishing second in 2015 and Simenon finishing fourth in 2013.

Gustavus Vassa won his maiden at Down Royal first time out this year on 24th June before running back at Gowran Park on 4th July over nine and a half furlongs finishing second to another promising type with a similar profile.

Gustavus Vassa competed in high class Irish handicaps at the back end of last season. He wintered very well and his first run this season, when beaten a nose in the Cork Derby, was full of promise. He is a very exciting horse for his owners for the remainder of the season. He is entered in the Northumberland Place on the 30th June.
