Nicklaus, a gelding by Exceed and Excel, was originally purchased at the Baden-Baden Sale by Peter Doyle for €180,000. Nicklaus improved throughout his first year with William Haggas, so much so that when he came on the market as a three-year-old, William was anxious to keep him at Somerville Lodge and for Highclere to reap the benefit.

The trainer was vindicated by impressive victories at Newbury and Salisbury before a commendable third place in a very hot handicap at Glorious Goodwood where he went down by a bare two lengths. Next time up at York everything that could go wrong, did. However, on his run at Yarmouth he came back to form, scoring in style after a masterful hold-up ride from James Doyle!

Nicklaus put up some excellent efforts in 2019, coming third in a hot Class 2 handicap at Chelmsford, second in Class 2 handicaps at Salisbury and Chelmsford, and most recently third in a handicap at Newmarket after encountering traffic problems about two and a half furlongs from home.

Nicklaus started his season with a very tough assignment in the Silver Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot and ran a solid race without ever really looking threatening, but showed that he will come on for the run. This he certainly did next time out at Ripon, where he was unlucky to bump into the very lightly weighted and fast improving Dark Jedi who was carryiing six pounds less than Nicklaus. The positive to take out of the race was that Nicklaus showed  he can be effcetive over the extended trip of a mile and a quarter. He was tried over this trip at Ripon next time where he looked all over the winner before getting done in the last strides. On his next run he put in a very solid performance to finsh 3rd out of six at Newmarket.  Following that he finished 5th out of eleven in what was a very hot handicap. His next performance was below par where he missed the break and never found much in the running to come 6th. We put a line through that performance and were right to! Nicklaus battled really well to win at Great Yarmoth next time under a fantastic ride fromTom Marquand. Nicklaus ran yet another good race last time out for his syndicate members at Kempton to come a close fifth after being hard pressed in the closing stages.

He has been a terrific horse for the syndicate and it will be sad to see him go later on this month at the horses in training sale.
