By New Approach, who was himself a very impressive European Champion, and Derby Winner, Pesto is typical of New Approach progeny and took a little time to come into himself.  His dam is from a family that we know very well. Pickle, a multiple Group Three winner herself, produced one of our great horses in Gusto (trained by Richard Hannon Snr.)

Pesto's debut race at Newbury was very green and immature, but he then managed to get a grasp of the game in his second start at Sandown on July 25. He ran a highly promising race there, and we were very pleased to see him make such good progress.. To add value to this run, his debut was one of the best juvenile maidens at Newbury last season. He went on from that to win at Leicester on August 12 2018 by an easy 4 lengths. Oisin Murphy rode him and described him as “still very raw”. He has wintered well and developed into a fine looking colt.

Pesto made his three year old debut in a handicap at Sandown where he encountered traffic problems before battling on very impressively to dead heat! He carried top weight next time in a competitive handicap and finished sixth, possibly feeling the very fast ground on the day, before disapointing back at Sandown next time. He then put that performance well and truly behind him when flying down the straight late on to finish second at Kempton, his first run on the all weather.
