Prince Imperial

Richard Hughes called prior to the Tattersalls August HIT sale mentioning that Ted Durcan, who rides out for Sir Michael Stoute, had called recommending that he buy Prince Imperial, a beautifully bred son of Frankel out of the Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr 1) winner Proportional. Ted took Richard through Prince Imperial’s form explaining each race and it became quite clear that this was a horse that we should definitely try to buy. We got him for 50,000 guineas which we were seriously excited about and I am delighted to report that over the past few days he has settled well into life at Richard’s Weathercock House stables.

At the time of purchase he had a rating of 80 having run just four times. He won his second start as a two year old over a mile at Chelmsford last year and this year he has raced twice, finishing down the field at Doncaster at the end of June when badly hampered and eased as a result, and then on August 22nd he was an unlucky fifth over a mile and a quarter at Chelmsford. He got too far back but fairly flew home in the straight to be beaten around a couple of lengths. He would have won for sure had he not been too far off the pace. That was over a mile and a quarter and he now needs to step up to a mile and a half. He had his first run in the Highclere colours at Bath on the 13th of September to come a very respectable 4th, doing his best work at the end of the race. With this in mind he stepped up in trip next time out back at Bath and won impressively by two lengths! His handicap mark was raised to 84.

He has since been gelded and is now enjoying a winter break. We can look forward to next season with this exciting and progressive horse.
