Style de Garde

Style de Garde is as handsome a jumper as you would clap your eyes on.

Style de Garde’s English debut, an easy win at Newbury, had been a copycat of his final French race – an easy win in Strasbourg. Two other hurdles in his first season in Britain were not up to that standard but his sire Kapgarde is principally a sire of chasers and that will be Style de Garde’s job. He is the first foal out of a smart race mare, Anowe de Jelois, a five-time winner.

He put up a huge performance in March 2018 to finish second in the Fred Winter at Cheltenham. He stood out in the paddock and emerged the best horse in this always ultra competitive race, as he had to give 8lb to the Gordon Elliott-trained winner and was only beaten three lengths, clear of the rest. The following season he won at Hereford and was second at Taunton, gving nearly a stone to the winner.  He also put up a very decent effort in the Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and coming to the second last looked sure to be in the frame but was unable to quicken at a critical stage, then staying on well to finish tenth of the twenty four runners. While he has switched between hurdles and fences during the last campaign, his future will be over fences.

Unfortunately Style de Garde suffered a setback during his time at grass in the summer of 2019, but is now back in training having made a good recovery. Nicky Henderson will keep him in training for the time being in the hope that jumping resumes in July.
