One of the greatest of all race mares Beeswing won fifty one of her sixty four races between 1835 and 1842. Trained at Middleham her wins included numerous Cups and in her final season the Ascot Gold Cup. She became a high class brood mare and the charming picture of her with her 1848 foal at foot, hanging in The Jockey Club Rooms, is of additional interest because that foal happened to be Newminster who three years later won the St. Leger. Newminster went on to become champion sire himself and in a distinguished career sired Hermit who won the Derby and who himself was champion sire seven years running.
