Masquerade was foaled in 1771 and she had the most arduous racing career imaginable. She raced from 1774 to 1781 for her breeder, the Earl of Clermont, and in all she won thirty races and over 5,500 guineas. Twice matched against the outstanding horse, Shark, in 1776 she beat him both times probably because she had much more speed than was typical of the period. On another occasion she beat Mr Pulteney’s chestnut hunter giving 11lbs over only two furlongs! Nowadays it seems beyond imagination that a mare of this class could ever be matched with somebody’s hunter at Newmarket!
