Matilda won her owner, the Hon. Edward Petre, the second of his four St Legers. In her picture in The Jockey Club Rooms, she is depicted at Doncaster with James Robinson up, as had been the case when she beat the Derby winner Marmeluke. It was a sensational race and Herring certainly pulled out all the stops to produce this most attractive picture of the filly. Indeed, could any picture of a horse be more definitively feminine? A victory in the St Leger was long remembered as a great triumph for the North over a Southern raider and amongst other things eventually gave rise to an epic poem written by the Professor of Verse at Oxford:
“Snorting and prancing – sidling by
With arching neck and glancing eye”
