Lord Coventry was educated at Eton and Oxford and registered his racing colours in 1858. Amongst his best horses on the Flat were Verdict (Cambridgeshire Handicap and Coronation Cup) and Thalestris, a very good-looking mare who won the Cesarewitch.
William has long been one of Highclere’s most successful trainers and he continues to do wonders with so many of the horses in his yard. Last season he trained Approve to win both the Norfolk Stakes (Gr 2) at Royal Ascot and the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 2) at York – a remarkable feat which has only been achieved on two previous occasions by any trainer. William’s facilities are second to none and include an equine treadmill which is proving to be an invaluable asset, especially to those horses who have soundness problems. This year William trained Dancing Rain to win the Investec Oaks (G1) and she went on to take the German Oaks (G1) in August.
Ed Dunlop has settled in well to his new yard at La Grange stables and all who are given the grand tour are immensely impressed with the extensive refurbishment and wonderful range of facilities which also include an equine spa and treadmill. He trained champion mare, Ouija Board and has fired out the winners since moving to La Grange with the most impressive being his brilliant dual Oaks winning filly, Snow Fairy, who amassed over £2 million in prize money in 2010.
