Brought up in a family engrossed in sport Scott decided to leave school early in order to pursue a career in tennis like his father. However, after five years on the international circuit Scott retired from tennis and set his sights on joining the British Army. Despite not having sat his A Levels and therefore ineligible for the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Scott did not give up on his dream of joining the Army. After 7 months and 11 rejection letters Scott was asked to attend the Officer selection board and commissioned into the Royal Gurkha Rifles in December 2015. In 2017 he successfully broke the record for the youngest person ever to reach the South Pole completely alone, unassisted and unsupported. He completed the 1100km expedition from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole, the equivalent of walking from London to the Czech Republic in minus 50°c and winds of up to 150mph.

William Haggas has long been one of Highclere’s principal trainers and remains as popular as ever with our owners. William has consistently performed at the top level and had his most successful season in 2017 netting over £2,700,000 in prize money. His welcome remains as warm as ever and there is always plenty of playful banter at stable visits. He has enjoyed many successes with Highclere horses such as Approve, Brunel, Collection, Conquest, Raucous and more recently Mam’selle. William and his wife Maureen are a hardworking duo who have developed a seriously impressive training facility in Newmarket, which spans two yards and includes a spa, vibration plate, salt room and two treadmills.
