Foaled in 1837 and bred by King William IV Pocahontas, although quite a useful racehorse, never won due to the fact that she was consistently campaigned in only the best races. On retiring to stud she became, against all the odds, one of the greatest broodmares in the history of the breed producing, amongst others, three truly oustanding sons in Stockwell, Rataplan and King Tom. She also produced several daughters who became good broodmares. She lived to the remarkable age of thirty three and the painting of her that is hung in The Jockey Club Rooms is thought to be the only contemporary work of the great mare.
