Rockingham originally belonged to the Prince of Wales but he sold him on and by 1788 he was firmly established as one of the best horses in the country. He was sold to the notoriously eccentric Lord Barrymore who had paid two and a half thousand Guineas for him and he then went on to ride the horse himself in a match against a leading professional for three hundred Guineas, which he duly won! The equivalent nowadays would be to buy a horse for over one hundred thousand Guineas as an amateur rider and take on Frankie Dettori in a match for a bet of over thirty thousand pounds!
