Tod Sloan, an American, was an inventive and highly successful jockey who pioneered what was called the “monkey ride” or “perching on the animal’s ears” riding with very short stirrups and lying low with his head almost on the horse’s neck. In 1896 he crossed the Atlantic to Britain to become a rider for the then Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII. He died alone and lonely in 1933 prompting the rhyming slang “to be on your tod.”
Champion trainers Richard Hannon and Sir Michael Stoute combine once again in a team that has proven to be unbelievably successful for our owners over the years. Richard Hannon is heading towards his second consecutive trainers championship and his remarkable talent for producing a seemingly endless flow of two-year-old winners remains unabated, while Sir Michael is the master of fine-tuning the late maturing type. They have trained numerous top class horses for Highclere and were responsible last year for two of our best, in Harbinger and Memory, both of whom were declared Champions at the end of the season.
