Lord Wavertree owned the Tully Stud and in 1916 he sold it and his training stables in Wiltshire to the nation and gave away all his bloodstock with a veiw to improving cavalry horses. This became the National Stud, now at Newmarket. Wavertree could have a somewhat inflated view of his horses’ ability and when they failed to live up to it, he blamed the jockeys and trainers. His trainers tended not to last for long!
This is our most exclusive syndicate with only twelve shares and the horses average 220,000 guineas apeice, which means that John is able to buy stunning individuals who also have superior pedigrees. William Haggas and Sir Michael Stoute need little introduction and both trainers have been with us since we began in 1992 producing many of our top class winners. Sir Michael was responsible for our first Classic winner Petrushka who won the Kildangan Stud Irisn Oaks in 2000 and of course, in 2010, he trained Harbinger to win the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Group 1). In so doing, Harbinger became the highest rated horse in the world.
Derby winning trainer William added the Investec Oaks (Group 1) to his list of big-race wins courtesy of Dancing Rain in 2011. Over the years he has been responsible for numerous Highclere stars such as Brunel, Conquest and Approve and this year he has trained Firebeam who looks likely to shape into a Group performer next year having won three races this season.
