Alan King served his apprenticeship under one of the great ‘old school’ National Hunt trainers David Nicholson. Upon his retirement, Alan took over the licence in December 1999 at the purpose built Jackdaws Castle. In June 2000, he moved to Barbury Castle in Wiltshire.
Alan has trained 12 Cheltenham Festival winners and has handled such stars as 2007 Triumph Hurdle and 2008 Champion Hurdle winner Katchit, triple Grade 1 winner My Way de Solzen and four-time Grade 1 winner Voy Por Ustedes who won the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 2007. He has forged a long and successful association with stable jockey Robert ‘Choc’ Thornton who also learnt his trade under David Nicholson.
