Roger Varian

Roger took over the licence from Michael Jarvis at Kremlin House Stables, Newmarket in February 2011 and became one of very few trainers to gain Group 1 glory in his first season when Nahrain won the Prix de l'Opera. That total of Group Ones has risen to fourteen in under eight seasons. Last year, Roger’s first in Carlburg Stables,  produced 107 winners. At 39  Roger’s best years are ahead of him.

Through 2015 and 2016 Roger won six Group races in a row with Postponed, three of them at Group 1 level. Like his mentor, Roger has never been afraid to travel his horses and Postponed won over a quarter of a million pounds when taking the Sheema Classic.

Thus far in his brief but meteoric career, each season has been an advance on the one previous. In 2013 Kingston Hill won the Racing Post Trophy and in his Classic season was second in the Derby before landing the St Leger.  At the beginning of 2017 Roger relocated to Carlburg Stables on the Bury Road, Newmarket, where his prize money this season is approaching £1.5m.

Roger’s quiet, easy going demeanour hides the steel of a former jump jockey who’s ambitions are driving him to the top.
