William Haggas

William Haggas won with his first runner in the Derby, Shaamit in 1996, and his first in the Oaks, Dancing Rain 2011. His latest Classic winner is Irish and Yorkshire Oaks heroine Sea of Class who is in contention for horse of the year.

William is son-in-law of Lester Piggott, marrying Lester’s daughter Maureen in 1989. They make a remarkable team at Somerville Lodge, Newmarket from where he sent out his first winner in 1987. His first Royal Ascot winner came in Shaamit’s Derby year – Yeast, for his father!

William’s many top-level horses include Chorist, Aqlaam, King's Apostle and Coral Eclipse victor Mukhadram. He is firmly ensconced among the top ten trainers and has so far accumulated just short of £2.5m prize money in 2018 with an admirable strike rate of 22 per cent.

William has trained for Highclere since 1992 - notably Brunel, winner of the German 2,000 Guineas and the Topkapi Trophy in Istanbul in 2005; Conquest, winner of the Gimcrack Stakes; and Collection, winner of the Listed Hampton Court at Royal Ascot in 2008. In 2010 William trained Approve to multiple Group winning success before the colt was sold for stud duties in Ireland.
