We were thrilled to secure this colt at the Tattersalls Book 3 sale, a cracking son of Bated Breath, the best value sire of blacktype performers in Europe in 2020. He sired no less than 18 stakes performers in 2020 including Group winners Makaloun, Viiadera (now a Group 1 winner) and Breathtaking Look. In 2019 he produced three winners at Royal Ascot, the same as Galileo and Sea the Stars. He boasts a very impressive strike rate of 58% winners to runners, of which 89% are winners at eight and a half furlongs or less.

George Baker teamed up with ex jockey Ted Durcan to buy this colt late into the evening session at the sale when plenty of buyers had done their business and departed. Ted was determined not to let this one go and was very pleasantly surprised when they hammer came down at just 48,000 guineas. In normal times we would have expected this horse to have cost significantly more. He was bred at Nicholas and Cherry Jones’s Coln Valley Stud in Gloucestershire, who have the colt’s two year old sister in training with Andrew Balding who thinks plenty of her. Frustratingly she picked up a minor injury in the spring, prior to which she was being trained for Royal Ascot and is clearly held in high regard.

Throughout the breaking process, George was continually pleased by this athletic colt and George is really excited about it him. Botanist made a highly encouraging debut at Newbury to finish fourth having looked a possible winner at one stage. He will come on a great deal for the run and should go very close next time!
