This wonderful early March-foaled filly was the third top-priced lot sold at the Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale and the feeling is that she would have sold for considerably more had she been sent to one of the more fashionable sales.

She was purchased by her trainer Richard Hannon and after hearing very good independent reports about her from the sale we were in touch with him that same day and delighted to secure the filly following our inspection.  She looks a strong filly who should be a fast two-year-old, she also moves very well.

Starspangledbanner was exceptionally fast and the best son of Choisir.  Like his sire he won the Gr.1 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot as well as the Gr.1 July Cup at Newmarket.  In Australia he was a dual Gr.1 winner of the Oakleigh Plate and Caulfield Guineas.  He suffered with infertility initially at stud but from his first crop of just 28 runners sired a remarkable eight Stakes winners which featured two Royal Ascot winners in The Wow Signal (Gr.2 Coventry and also the Gr.1 Prix Morny) and Anthem Alexander (Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes).  His first big crop of 2yos hit the track in 2019 and he was once again a huge success, notably with Millisle winning the Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes.  Click here to view sire information about Starspangledbanner.

This filly’s dam Callendula was tough and consistent, winning two races and reaching a useful peak Racing Post rating of 88.  She hails from a useful Stakes-producing family that includes the Gr.3 winner Munwar, also the Listed winner and Gr.1-placed Hateel.

Cirrus made a highly encouraging debut at Newmarket where she finished second to the highly fancied Setarhe trained by Roger Varian. This looked a particularly strong maiden and it was exciting to see how this filly fought back having been passed by the winner and was closing again at the line. She was unable to build on that when finishing down the field in the Albany at Royal Ascot where soft conditions were not to her liking. She ran a good race when stepped up in trip to seven fulongs at Salisbury to finish fourth before a very creditable 10th in the Super Sprint at Newbury in a field of 25. At Chelmsford City she put in a solid performance to finish 4th again. Her next run was back at Salisbury where she put in yet another strong performance to finish third, only one and three quarter lengths off the winner after being unluckily held up when she had to momentarily apply the breaks. Her last run of the season was at Kempton where she unfortunately got stuck behind a wall of horses but once a gap did appear, Sean Levey asked her for an effort and she made a good looking forward move to come a respectable 4th of 13 runners.

Cirrus began her three year old campaign with a very solid third at Nottingham and looks sure to come on for the run.
