Highclere owner Experience

First time ownership and a win first time out!

by Carol Kennedy

Having purchased a share in Knowledge in December 2024 it was very welcome news that he was to race at Southwell on 17th January 2026. I told myself it wasn’t worth travelling almost 4 hours to see Knowledge run his maiden race but the fear of missing something special got the better of me and I decided to go.

I arrived at Southwell Racecourse to a warm welcome from the course staff, having had a look at the layout I made my way to O&T and had the good fortune to recognise a fellow syndicate member. Having chatted and watched the early races we met up with Emily and two further syndicate members.

The anticipation was building and it was soon time to make our way to the parade ring to see Knowledge and chat with the trainer and jockey, who discussed the planned tactics for the race. It was a misty night, but it had cleared a little and the horses were soon making their way to the start. Emily ushered us all to the best place to see the race and soon they were off. A mixture of excitement, anticipation, and disbelief that this was finally happening overwhelmed me and I watched anxiously. With seven runners Harry Davies positioned Knowledge behind the two leading horses but as they approached the final ¼ mile it became apparent that Knowledge was making ground and challenging the leaders. He made progress but it was inside the final furlong that he came alongside the favourite Venetian Prince and was gaining ground. They crossed the finish line, and it was too close to call. It was amazing but I dared not hope he had won, then came the announcement first Knowledge, second Venetian Prince, he’d won. It is hard to describe the sense of elation, euphoria, and disbelief. It was real he’d won!

Guided by Emily we went to the winner’s enclosure to see Harry Davies and Knowledge. After photos, trophies, and refreshments to celebrate I made my way back to my hotel floating on cloud nine still unable to believe the fantastic result and experience, it was surreal. What an amazing night, one I shall never forget.

I would like to thank Highclere and Emily for the excellent organisation making sure we were in the right place at the right time to enjoy the experience to its maximum. Also, thanks to Simon and Ed Crisford and their staff for the wonderful way they have looked after and trained Knowledge.
