William Haggas

Location: Newmarket, Suffolk.

William Haggas has long been one of Highclere’s principal trainers and remains as popular as ever with our owners. He has enjoyed many successes with Highclere horses over the years, such as Approve (G2 Norfolk & G2 Gimcrack), Brunel (German 2000 Guineas) and Conquest (Stewards’ Cup winner).

William and his wife Maureen are a hardworking duo who have developed a seriously impressive training facility in the heart of Newmarket, which spans two yards and includes a spa, vibration plate, salt room and two treadmills.

In a career, which has spanned four decades, William has trained a plethora of Group 1 winners, including seven Classic winners. In 2011 Dancing Rain made all in the Epsom Oaks to add to Shaamit’s 1996 Derby victory. He came agonisingly close to winning the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe with his Irish and Yorkshire Oaks winner Sea Of Class, who went down by a short neck to Enable in the 2018 renewal.

He masterfully handled the career of star-miler Baaeed who won 10 of his 11 starts, including six Group 1 races. William continues to break new ground and made the headlines in 2023 when Dubai Honour travelled to Australia to win two Group 1s, including the $5million Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
