CONCLAVE

Winning debut at Kempton

04.03.26

Alex’s Introduction…

I am delighted to report that Harry is well on the road to recovery and we are all looking forward to seeing him back in action in May. In horsey terms he is still on the walker but wanting to do more!!

We are now well into our stable visits, and it has been great to see so many of our owners after a long, wet winter! As ever we are so grateful to our group of trainers who do so much to look after us all and the Jockey Club Rooms remain as special as ever, so for anyone who has still to book in, please get in touch.

The two-year-olds continue to make excellent progress with a number looking as if they will debut in April and May, and hopefully show they could be candidates for Royal Ascot!! One of those is a beautiful daughter of first season sire Persian Force called Topaz who is our horse in focus in this edition. Please do click here for a closer look.

It has been a very productive month on the racecourse with Moonshine breaking her duck in good style at Kempton. Respond was highly impressive when making all at Chelmsford. He went on to run a highly creditable race in the Rosebery at Kempton at the weekend, where we had three runners on the card and nearly fifty owners in attendance! On the National Hunt side Followcato made it a remarkable four wins in a row and may still have the chance to add a fifth before the end of the season!

The first of our events will be at Epsom where we will walk the famous Derby course before a light lunch and racing from the comfort of a box. There are still a few spaces left so if you haven’t experienced the course walk before, it really is fascinating to understand just what horse and jockey are up against. Talking of The Derby, you may have seen an event we have added on Derby day. This promises to be a highly enjoyable day with a delicious picnic with champagne and wines (carefully selected by yours truly) in the newly dressed Derby stables, afternoon tea, Queens Stand badge and parking all for just £275pp, surely one of the best value packages for a major racing festival anywhere! We would like to support Epsom in their initiative to bring back the crowds.

With my best wishes,

Alex Smith

HORSE IN FOCUS

Topaz is a striking, well-balanced two-year-old filly trained by Jack Channon who has been catching the eye on the gallops. She has shown natural pace and professionalism in her work, quickening smartly and finishing her pieces strongly—signs of a precocious juvenile with plenty of upside. Her trainer holds her in high regard, even suggesting she could develop into a filly capable of lining up at Royal Ascot—high praise at this stage of her career.

ON THE TRACK

The action has stepped up a notch as we approach the start of the turf season. We have enjoyed success on both the Flat and National Hunt fronts. Kempton has proved a particularly happy hunting ground, with Moonshine and Conclave both getting off the mark in fine style, while Respond went one better than his seasonal debut with an impressive victory at Chelmsford in testing conditions under Oisin Murphy.

GET to know Jack Channon

My earliest memory has to be the excitement surrounding Queen’s Logic during her training in 2000/2001. She was a champion two-year-old filly and arguably the best my dad has ever trained. I vividly remember the thrill of her winning the Cheveley Park Stakes by around six lengths, as well as the disappointment when she was unable to run in the Guineas despite being the odds-on favourite.

Owners Experience

Followcato's extraordinary rise to fame came in December 2025 at Ludlow where he won in superb style followed by two more decisive victories at Exeter and Hereford. Leicester was to follow.

Could we even dream of a fourth victory in a row? With the full support of owners, Ben Pauling, and Frances, our fourth victory was in our sights.

ROLF’s RAMBLINGS

I went into the Mysore GPO to send postcards to the UK. The man behind the counter asked: “Mail speedy or ordinary sir?”

“Speedy certainly,” I replied.

“Sorry sir, ‘Speedy gone”.

After a polite exchange on the efficacy of modern postal services, as I left he called out: “How are you getting back to UK sir?”

“Speedy,” I retorted. But I was getting ahead of myself.

“There have already been so many amazing Highclere days with the likes of Believing and Awaken - not to mention sitting next to Ruby in Paris, but I’ll always remember Moonshine at Kempton!” - Claire Goodwin

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

This month we catch up with Reflex who is a striking grey by El Kabeir who was trained with Charlie Fellowes until 2023 when we moved him on. He trained on for another year before being retired and given a lovely home by Sarah Twigg who adores him. He is now enjoying life as an all-rounder and has even been to Aintree to enjoy some gallop training there!
